Still Have Questions?
Proofreading and Editing
I offer these services for authors, businesses, academics, students and individuals. Proofreading is basically correction of grammar, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Editing (or copyediting) goes further, changing structure and improving the flow, and changing things that are technically correct but not the best choice. Copyediting involves the same as proofreading, and then tidying up the work for sense, factual accuracy (where applicable) and readability.
Other kinds of editing may involve completely rewriting, or, what I term as “reworking”, all or part of your document. For fiction, a copyedit or an in-depth edit are possible. An in-depth edit is similar to a developmental edit, in that it looks more deeply at your storyline, characters and plot. I check for character depth and motivation, balance in setting and dialogue and action and exposition. I check scene and chapter beginnings, ending hooks and transitions, making sure the reader is engaged by each. I would then physically change this in your manuscript, or, if you prefer give extensive advice to you on how to do it. I also offer a beta reading service, which would give you across the board recommendations for changes.
Costs
My charges are very reasonable, and less than those recommended by the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading.
NOTE: there can, in certain circumstances, be flexibility on the price, depending on various factors including your project and its complexity. Although I cannot guarantee you will qualify, it’s always worth getting in touch to see how I can help if you have a specific budget in mind.
New! Pay up Front Packages!
(See below for deposit option packages).
With these packages you pay the entire fee up front, and get bigger discounts than the deposit option!
The advantage is that you get your document as soon as I’ve done it, without hanging around for payments to go through!
You will also still qualify for a cumulative word count discount (see below) on your next project, if you choose the deposit option that time.
5000 words of proofreading for £70
10000 words of proofreading £130
5000 words of copyediting for £92.50
10000 words of copyediting for £180
Developmental Edit (Advice only option)
10000 words for £135
50000 words for £600
Developmental Edit (full edit option)
5000 words for £120
10000 words for £280
50000 words for £1350
Don’t worry if your word count isn’t exactly on those figures, I will calculate the fee of any extra words as a percentage of the price package. For example, say you want 6000 words of proofreading. I’ll give you the £70 5000 word fee, then take the 1000 words as a percentage of the 5000 words fee (20%), making an extra £14, e.g. £84.
But hey, wipe the sweat from your brow… I’ll do the maths!
You can also double or triple up the packages where there isn’t one of the right number. Any questions, please contact me.
Deposit Option Payments
Copyediting and Proofreading
I charge £15 per 1000 words for proofreading and £20 for copyediting.
I charge £30 per 1000 words for a full fiction in-depth (developmental style) edit.
Advice only option. If you just want the advice and suggestions of an in-depth edit, so you can make the actual changes yourself, I charge £15 per 1000 words for this service. Normally, if you have a subsequent proofread or edit of the same document once it’s been changed, a 10% discount would be applied for the entire document (instead of word count discounts). Contact me for further details.
Reworking. If you’ve written something but just want it to be “reworded” throughout, putting it into better English or just different sentences, whilst keeping the same meaning, this will cost £12.50 per 100 words. It’s normally done for academic documents, but can be for non-academic ones too.
Beta Reading
£2 per 1000 words. This will generate approximately 1 sheet of A4 advice per 10,000 words of your work (12 pt TNR font, 1.5 spaced). Cumulative discounts do not apply for beta reads I’m afraid.
Writing
Writing for Businesses or Individuals including Ghostwriting
£20 per hour for writing from scratch. If you want something you’ve written “reworked” to make it read better, this would come either under the price for editing, or the price for a rework, listed above, depending on the complexity.
Academic Writing is charged at £15 per 100 words.
Cumulative Discounts (Deposit Option Only)
These discounts are applied to your first order, if applicable and are cumulative for work ordered within twelve months of last order, and in same category. For example, if you order two lots of proofreading work within twelve months of each other, and they are 20000 words each, the second piece of work would get a 5% discount. The discounts are cumulative depending on your document length, so if your document is 50,500 words, for example, you would get nothing off the first 10000 words, 2.5% off the next 10000 words, 5% off the next 30000 and 7.5% off the last 500 words.
10000 to 20000 words – 2.5% discount.
20000 to 50000 words – 5% discount
50000 plus words 7.5% – discount
Payment
Without Instalment Plan
50% of cost is payable in advance for deposit option. The remainder of cost is payable before receiving the document. Depending on what you’ve ordered I will normally send over parts of the document in PDF so you can see it’s been done. There is a minimum charge of £15 for any document. Payment by paypal or bank transfer and should be made within 48 hours of receiving the confirmation of work finished (unless previously arranged otherwise).
Instalment Plans
For customers ordering for high word counts, it will normally be possible to spread the cost interest free over several weeks or months. In this case, the deposit may be agreed to be less than 50%. The terms of this agreement will be agreed on contacting me. Normally the fully worked on document would not be released to you before payment is made in full.
Revisions and fair use
Once you have paid for and get the document I will make revisions to it if need be, until you are entirely satisfied. This is subject to fair use, which I can explain to you more when you order from me. I have to date had virtually no customers wanting revisions, which I think speaks for itself.
Requesting a sample
A sample is up to 1000 words that I proofread and/or edit ahead of the entire document. This is in order to check you are happy with my work and make any requests for the ongoing work. The cost is £15. If you go ahead with the work I will not charge you again for that part of the document. I recommend ordering a sample before paying the 50% in advance.
Turnaround Time
Sometimes as little as 48 hours for smaller documents. Longer documents such as books can take over a month, depending how much work needs doing and my workload. Contact me and ask.
Cancellation
If you decide to cancel after paying the 50% in advance, I will consider your request but will charge for any time I have already spent on your document before I got your request. Bear in mind that I may not get your message to cancel immediately and will be working on your document. If I can give you any work back that I’ve done up to that point I will do, but due to preparation time spent before the actual corrections take place on the page, it is possible that you will not get any of your document back in a worked on form.
For this reason I do not advise cancellation, and if you must please do so as early as possible. If you cancel after I’m over 50% through the time needed for the document, you will need to pay any monies owing to me before I can release the proofread/edited document back to you.
